SEN Teaching Assistant

Are you an experienced and passionate SEN Teaching Assistant looking for your next opportunity in Nottingham? Do you have experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly Autism (ASC)?

Balfor Recruitment is currently recruiting for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Long Eaton, Nottingham, from September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant to work within a supportive specialist setting and make a genuine difference to the lives and education of children and young people with additional needs.

The School & Role

The school is a specialist SEN school in Nottingham, supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).The school provides a therapeutic, nurturing and inclusive environment where pupils are supported to develop their confidence, independence, resilience and social skills. Through personalised learning programmes and a stimulating curriculum, the school aims to equip pupils with the skills they need to achieve positive outcomes both inside and beyond the classroom.

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other professionals to provide tailored support to pupils. You may work on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, helping pupils to access learning, manage their emotions, develop social skills and engage positively with school life.

This role would be particularly well suited to a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Autism Support Assistant with previous experience working in a specialist SEN or school setting.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEN, particularly pupils with Autism (ASC).
  • Supporting pupils with their learning, emotional regulation, communication and social development.
  • Helping pupils to manage their emotions, build resilience and develop positive social skills.
  • Supporting the class teacher with lesson planning, differentiation and adapting learning activities.
  • Modifying and adapting learning resources to meet individual pupils’ abilities and learning needs.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and maintaining a calm, safe and supportive classroom environment.
  • Acting as a trusted key adult for pupils and building positive, consistent relationships.
  • Providing emotional and pastoral support to pupils when required.
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress, engagement and development.
  • Providing regular feedback to teachers and relevant professionals regarding pupil progress and any challenges.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, support staff and other professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent support.

SEN Teaching Assistant Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Experience working as a SEN Teaching Assistant or in a similar education support role.
  • Previous experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Experience providing 1:1 support, ideally within a school, specialist education or alternative provision setting.
  • Experience supporting pupils with Autism / ASC would be highly desirable.
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • A nurturing, patient and empathetic approach to supporting children and young people.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm and consistent under pressure.
  • The adaptability and resilience to respond to different pupil needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with pupils, teachers, support staff and families.
  • A genuine passion for SEN education and supporting young people to achieve their potential.
