The end of the Commonwealth Games 2022
The end of the Commonwealth Games has approached after the Closing Ceremony kicked off at 8 pm last night.
The games have been an enormous success and global attraction, with a vast international audience all tuning into Birmingham.
Closing Ceremony
With a grand finale of a Closing Ceremony, Birmingham has marked its place as one of the top cities in England.
Special appearances like Ozzy Osbourne shocked the crowd, as he surprised fans with a performance.
The 73-year-old musician was born in Aston, Birmingham – as he returned to his home city for the games.
“Birmingham forever!” the ‘Prince of Darkness’ shouted to his audience of 30,000 fans from across the globe.
Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t the only special music act to perform; as live acts like UB40, Jaykae and Jorja Smith performed at Alexander Stadium.
Commonwealth Games 2022
It was an amazing show after Team England collected a record of 176 medals.
However, Australia took first place with 178 medals.
There were more than 4,500 athletes from 72 nations competing throughout the week and a half, with amazing weather to follow.
With over 1.3 million tickets sold, it was the most attended Commonwealth Games in history.
Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston credited Birmingham’s great job of hosting the games, as the city delivered “a Games of amazing achievements”.
This has opened up conversations about Birmingham hosting future games and different events, with mentions of the Eurovision and the Olympics.
The next city to host the Commonwealth Games will be Victoria, based in Australia for the 2026 games.
Bull Mania
Birmingham has left an impression, as our mechanical bull in Centenary Square is constantly surrounded by his admirers.
The bull was set to leave after the games but over 10,000 people have signed for him to be kept in the city – which has granted him an extra 2 months.
The mechanical bull performed every hour, as smoke poured out of his nostrils whilst running on the spot.
However, his performances have stopped alongside the games – as it takes an entire team to run his movements.
What’s next for Birmingham?
The festivities won’t end after the Commonwealth Games, as more celebrations are planned for the following months.
Plenty of musical acts will perform throughout Birmingham in August, taking place in parks and streets across the West Midlands.
A new outdoor musical theatre will be opened the next month, which is just one of the events set to take place.
The Soul City Arts will take place from August 25th to 30th, performed by award-winning street artist, Mohammed Ali.
As well as there, there are even more exciting events planned for September.
For example, Victoria Square will host a colourful celebration from September 2 to 18th.
A highly-anticipated world premiere of Peaky Blinders will show at Birmingham Hippodrome from September 27th to October 2nd.
