About the Role

We are currently seeking a skilled and compassionate Teaching Support Assistant to join a vibrant special needs school in Birmingham. This full-time position is available on a long-term basis and offers an excellent opportunity to work closely with pupils who have a range of additional needs, including autism (ASD), ADHD, moderate learning difficulties (MLD), and severe learning difficulties (SLD).

If you have previous experience supporting children in an educational or care setting and are passionate about inclusive learning, this could be the ideal next step in your career.

What the School Offers

This school prides itself on being a welcoming and inclusive environment where both staff and pupils feel valued. In this role, you can expect:

  • A competitive daily pay rate, including SEN allowance
  • Strong leadership and consistent support from the school’s SENCO
  • A friendly, experienced team who work collaboratively
  • Access to free, ongoing CPD to enhance your professional development
  • Dedicated support from experienced education consultants throughout your placement

This is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to positively impact young lives every single day.

Your Main Responsibilities

As a Teaching Support Assistant, your key duties will include:

  • Providing Supervision: Ensure pupils are safe and supported throughout the school day, particularly when helping manage challenging behaviours
  • Building Positive Relationships: Develop trust and rapport with pupils to help them feel secure, confident, and engaged in their learning
  • Facilitating Sensory Activities: Support pupils with sensory needs by assisting in sensory rooms and using calming techniques as needed
  • Encouraging Movement: Promote physical wellbeing by organising daily outdoor activities that help pupils manage energy and focus levels

You’ll work closely with teachers and other support staff to implement tailored strategies and adapt resources to meet each pupil’s individual needs.

What We’re Looking For

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • At least two years of experience supporting children or young people with SEN
  • A background in education, childcare, or healthcare
  • Familiarity with PECS and/or Makaton (desirable)
  • Experience working with pupils with complex needs such as PMLD, SLD, MLD, or ASD
  • A Level 1 Safeguarding certificate (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Two recent, relevant references from a school or childcare setting
  • A valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • An enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or willingness to apply for one)
