A fantastic, supportive school in Oscott are seeking to appoint two passionate and resilient Special Needs Teaching Assistants to join their team. This school in Oscott strives to provide the best quality teaching and learning with an inclusive and personalised curriculum for all their SEND pupils.

 

Available positions:

  • 1:1 SEN teaching Assistant, working closely with an ASD child within the mainstream setting.
  • SEN Teaching Assistant working in the schools’ resource base for children with ASD, MLD and sensory needs.

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teaching Assistant OR Relevant SEN Background
  • Experience supporting SEN, or young people with a range of needs.
  • Level 1 safeguarding certificate
  • PECS, Team Teach, Makaton training/experience is desired, but not required.
  • Recent and relevant references
  • Valid Photo ID – Driving Licence or passport
  • Full DBS – on the update service (this can be processed for you)

The ideal candidate for this role will be experienced supporting children alongside children with a range of different academic attainment levels. It is essential that these students have a SEN Teaching Assistant to act as a positive role model as well as good academic knowledge to provide lesson support. This will require patience, commitment and the ability to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment.

 

Duties:

  • Provide assistance during lessons and activities.
  • Adapt teaching materials and methods to meet the child’s needs.
  • Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and monitor progress.
  • Assist in creating an inclusive learning environment.
  • Facilitate group work and encourage the SEN child’s participation.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies as directed by the teacher or SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
  • Provide positive reinforcement and support to help the child manage their behaviour.
  • Develop a trusting relationship with the child to encourage communication and expression of feelings.
  • Provide assistance during emotional crises or periods of stress.
  • Use alternative communication methods (e.g., sign language, picture exchange) if necessary.
  • On occasion assist with physical needs, such as mobility/ toileting if required.
  • Provide additional explanation and guidance on topics that the child finds challenging.
  • Support the development of literacy and numeracy skills through targeted activities.
  • Report observations to the teacher or SENCO to inform planning and intervention.
  • Assist with the creation of visual aids and displays to support the child’s learning.
