The Commonwealth Games celebrations kick off tonight, as Birmingham hosts the competition this year!
Commonwealth Games Birmingham: Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games will launch tonight, based in the heart of Birmingham.
Starting at 7:00 pm, the opening ceremony will take place at the Alexander Stadium – with national coverage live-streamed by BBC One.
With the games located in the West Midlands, it’s due to be the most popular year yet.
1.2 million tickets have been sold so far, with very few remaining before the event begins.
The creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, has helped to produce and will deliver the opening ceremony for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Steven Knight describes the event as “It feels like it’s Birmingham’s turn to shine – and this show certainly shines.”
Tonight’s opening ceremony will include 2,000 performers to represent and showcase Birmingham’s history.
Here is a quick preview of the special acts scheduled to perform:
- Duran Duran
- Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi
- Saxophonist Soweto Kinch
- A choir of over 700 voices
- Various musicians from across the West Midlands
The Commonwealth Games will take place over the next 12 days, with roughly 6,500 athletes competing to win their title.
This year, new sports have been added to the mix; such as women’s Twenty20 cricket, three-on-three basketball and mixed synchronised swimming.
Despite receiving backlash from traditionalists, there will be a virtual esports pilot event towards the end of the Commonwealth Games.
The debate around esports and its legibility cause high controversy and whether it’s inspiring young people to get involved.
Why Birmingham?
Birmingham is Europe’s youngest city, with under-25s representing 40% of our population.
With a younger population, Birmingham can provide a new feel and perspective for the Commonwealth Games.
With the Commonwealth Games beginning in 1930, England has only ever hosted it on two occasions. The first was in 1934, located in London and the second was in Manchester, 2002.
