SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Birmingham | Full-Time | £85–£100 per day
Balfor Education is delighted to partner with an outstanding special needs community school in Birmingham to recruit a full-time SEMH Teaching Assistant. This role offers an excellent opportunity to support pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs in a nurturing and inclusive environment. The school is committed to personalised education, conducting thorough assessments to understand each pupil’s unique challenges and strengths to provide tailored support.
Role Overview:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to support lesson preparation, classroom displays, and provide dedicated 1:1 or small group support to pupils. Your role will be vital in helping students engage with their learning while managing their social and emotional wellbeing.
Who We’re Looking For:
The ideal candidate will have experience or a strong passion for working with children with SEMH needs and be comfortable collaborating within a SEMH-focused team. Flexibility, patience, and a nurturing approach are essential, along with effective communication skills to work well with colleagues and students alike.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support teachers in preparing materials and classroom displays
- Provide focused 1:1 or small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Assist with assessing and understanding pupils’ social, emotional, and mental health requirements
- Foster a compassionate and supportive learning environment
Requirements:
- Qualified Teaching Assistant or relevant SEN background
- Experience or training in PECS and Makaton
- Proven experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs
- Level 1 Safeguarding certificate
- Recent school-based references
- Valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
- Enhanced DBS certificate or subscription to the DBS update service
